Breast Augmentation
Surgical

Breast Augmentation is the surgical term for enlarging or reshaping the female breasts by the insertion of implant.

Breast Augmentation

What are the risks and likely after effects?

After breast augmentation it is normal for all women to experience swelling, bruising and numbness. A very small number may also encounter infection. Long term, in a minority of cases the body may react to the implants by creating a hard capsule of scar tissue around them. This is correctable. The risks can be reduced by massage that shall be explained after the operation.

Why is it popular?

There are two types of patient who need this operatIon. Firstly, those who have never developed breast tissue and secondly, those who have found their breast tissue has decreased after having children. The benefits are self evident. Your breasts will be larger, fuller, firmer and more shapely.

What does the procedure involve?

The procedure to reduce the size of a breast involves removing excess skin, fat and breast tissue to create a new size and shape. The surgeon will reposition your nipple and areola to give the breast a natural appearance. The procedure can take upto 3 hours to complete depending upon the size of the breast. You will need to stay one maybe two nights in hospital. Thereafter a 2 week off work period would also be advised. In most cases breast feeding will be unlikely due to the nipples being seperated from most, if not all, of the underlying breast tissue.

What will happen after the operation?

Proving all is well your surgeon will allow you to return home the same day. You will need to wear a support bra continuously for the first two weeks to provide support and reduce swelling.. For the first week after surgery you will not be able to immerse your breasts in water. You should try to resume normal daily activities as soon as possible, however you should not drive or undertake any strenuous activity or exercise.

Do the implants ever rupture?

It is virtually impossible for silicone implants to rupture spontaneously. In the unlikely event that this does occur (due to a strong force as in a car accident) the gel-like nature of the filling means that the substance will stay in place and will not leak or migrate outside the casing so removal is easy.

How long do implants last?

The average life expectancy of an implant is probably around to 15-17 years, but this will depend on many factors.

Breast Reduction

Some women who have very large breasts often suffer from back and neck pain along with bad posture. This can be due to the uncomfortable heavy weight to their chest. Breast reduction surgery can restore confidence and give the patient a more proportionate look to her body and instill confidence as well as giving back the freedom to lead a more active life which is sometimes difficult with larger breats. What does the procedure involve?

The procedure is performed either under a local anesthetic or general anesthetic. You can choose which. Your surgeon willmake a small incision (usually 4-5cm) under each breast. The breast tissue is then raised from the underlying muscles and a pocket created, into which a textured silicone implant is inserted. The skin is then closed with small stitches and a light dressing applied. The whole procedure usually takes about an hour to perform. Sometimes if the tissue is thin, implants are placed behind the muscle. Your surgeon shall explain the operation plan at the time of your consultation.

Will implants effect my ability to breasfeed?

No absolutely not, the implants will not affect breast feeding.
